Artist Statement
Art has always been something that I’ve done for fun. At age 4, I was exhausting the various art kits my parents gave me, because even then I loved to paint and draw. With time and art classes, the scribbles gradually evolved into the paintings and drawings I make today.
Most of my current art incorporates elements from nature, such as flowers, bugs, and leaves. This interest in nature stems from growing up in a wooded neighborhood and having a dad who studies wildlife ecology. Fueled by this interest, I have used various media to explore and classify natural subjects, often arranging them into orderly grids. I am also drawn to objects typified by intricacy and color. In many of my pieces, I explore items from nature that have these qualities, such as by embroidering elaborate spiderwebs, or painting colorful fish.
Natural objects have also become a visual language for me, symbols through which I reflect on things of personal importance. For example, I collaborated with my dad to make leaf paintings as a way to commemorate the many conversations I have with him about plants. Though these pieces are more of a personal reflection, I also use some of my work to communicate with the audience. In these, I express my beliefs about God or the Bible, using art as a mechanism to say what is otherwise hard for me to articulate. This manifests in my art by the use of natural objects as symbols, or by titling a piece with a Bible verse.
